Suggestions for Usability Improvements for the Tool Options Docker/UI

The following suggestions where discussed on IRC January 23, 2013:

  • Whenever there is enough space in the content area of the tabs in the Tool Options Docker, use textual labels instead of or in addition to icons, especially for uncommon functions, so users don't have to learn the icon for each function
  • Evaluate if it is possible to find good icons for all commonly used tool option tabs. If it is, use only icons for the tabs themselves, as there are not that many tabs to learn and this saves horizontal space. If there are too many tabs for which good icons cannot be found, use icon + text for all tabs for consistency
  • Make the tabs adapt to the docker's position: Use vertically stacked tabs if the docker is placed on the side, use horizontal stacking if it is on top/bottom (long-term goal)
