Recommendations
Bilbao has some very interesting museums, like the famous Guggenheim Museum or the Museo de Bellas Artes.
If you would rather hang out by the sea, there are a few beaches close by which can easily be reached by bus or the Metro as near as 30 minutes + 15 min walking.
Do not forget to check the amazing plans for July near Bilbao. Some of them are in Bilbao or just half an hour by metro.
Additionally, here's a selection of other nearby towns and villages:
- Portugalete-Getxo: In these two towns you can visit the famous Hanging Bridge, a Unesco World Heritage site. You can reach them by taking the Metro.
- Gernika: Beautiful village at the coast that was bombed in the civil war and where the medieval parliament of Biscay was located. You can go there with Euskotren from Atxuri (see timetable). Nearby, there are wonderful beaches, and the remarkable painted forest of Oma. This all in the Biosphere Reserve of Urdaibai.
And in case you have a free day you should consider visiting one of the other three capital cities of the Basque Country: Donostia-San Sebastian (99 Km), Vitoria-Gasteiz (66 Km) or Pamplona-Iruña (157 Km). There are buses to each of them from Termibus (see routes and timetables).
