Special:Badtitle/NS90:Talk:Kdenlive/UI Review/Thoughts on "Finding functions without even looking for it" section
First of all, truly fantastic job with the stability, professionalism and polish that Kdenlive is and continues to become. Especially with this being free (yet incredibly powerful) software, you all deserve every bit of credit and appreciation for this project. So, from one humble life-long filmmaker, thank you all for offering Kdenlive to us! :)
It sounds like the discussions at the Randa meeting were quite helpful, and some terrific ideas arose from those discussions -- judging by the updates you've been posting. I wanted to offer some film-industry-versed, outside end-user perspective and thoughts on the subjects that were discussed -- primarily focusing this discussion thread on the first section: "Finding functions without even looking for it."
- I agree that the toolbar is of much better use as an actual toolbar and not a "here's the steps to making your film" bar. It would almost feel juvenile for the header toolbar to walk the user through the project steps for making a film; with the features, layout, and dynamic of Kdenlive, average to professional filmmakers/editors seem to be the demographic of this product -- upon first impression.
- I couldn't stress more the benefit of having an "Import" button in plain sight. I know you have an "add clip" button in the project bin (in 15.09.0), but - and I've stressed this as a suggestion/wishlist on the but reporting site - I really feel that calling all media 'clips" in your menu and tool options seem very limiting to the user, as if their sole function is to handle video clips exclusively, and not stills, or graphics, or music, or any other possible form of media. Using the term "media", "Import" by itself, or something more descriptive would - I believe - strongly improve the comprehensive workflow for users, both new and old.
- Possibly consider a dynamic toolbar? One where the user could somehow select and choose the tool buttons/options that are most relevant to them? I dunno, just throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what sticks. :)
- Consider a toolbar like the one currently in Dolphin 15.08, which seeks to eliminate the need (mostly) for the menu bar, including all of the most important and frequent functions used in the toolbar itself?
