Calligra/Press Kit 2.4

From KDE Community Wiki

About this document: This document is a short explanation of Calligra for the press and other media in preparation for our 2.4 release. We hope to shed light on potentially confusing aspects of our project.
Please note: Aspects outlined in this document may change as development progresses.

What Calligra is

Calligra is a project to develop high quality graphics and office software. It is developed as free software, and we are part of the larger KDE community.

The software is highly modular and can be classified into three main categories:

  • Calligra Engine: This is the back-end that powers our end-user focused applications. Calligra Engine is explicitly written to be reused by other developers in their software. Being available under GNU LGPL v2.1 or later we do not dictate how the host software has to be licensed. Calligra Engine is currently being deployed by Nokia with their well received N9 and N950 smartphones.
  • Calligra Suite: Calligra Suite is our flagship product. Available for desktop computers running a variety of operating systems, Calligra Suite makes available the full range of features Calligra Engine offers.
  • Calligra Active: Calligra Active is our front-end for tablet computers. Calligra Active is mainly meant to be a document viewer with only limited editing capabilities that works hand in hand with Plasma Active by other fellow KDE community members.

Branding

Naming

Our development project is called “Calligra”, after the word “calligraphy”. While we are a member of the KDE community and work together with KDE translators, artists and documentation writers, do not refer to our software as “KDE Calligra Suite” or something like that to avoid the incorrect assumption that our software only runs in conjunction with a KDE workspace such as Plasma Desktop.

Refer to our software only as ”Calligra Suite“, “Calligra Active”, etc. and try to avoid abbreviations unless the context is 100% clear. Otherwise Calligra Suite may be confused with Adobe’s Creative Suite.

Internet address

Our website is located at http://calligra.org.

When we initiated our project, we used the address http://calligra-suite.org. Do not use it any longer as it may be phased out in the future. Online publications are advised to edit links in older articles discussing Calligra from calligra-suite.org to calligra.org.

Calligra has its own logo. Navigate to Calligra/Logos to obtain it. Be sure to follow the logo guidelines.

If you want to incorporate Calligra’s KDE background, the official KDE logo page is located at http://kde.org/stuff/clipart.php

Versions

Calligra Suite and Engine are released simultaneously and feature the same version number.

Calligra Suite 2.4 is the first release under that name but we didn't start from scratch and picked off where we were when we left KOffice.

After our 2.4 release we will adopt a 4-months release cycle.
Focus of those upcoming releases will be greater robustness, even further improved OpenDocument and Microsoft Office document support, and at some point the transition to KDE Frameworks 5.

Supported platforms

Our main platforms are Unix-like operating systems like Linux as well as Microsoft Windows.

In theory all platforms supported by the Qt framework should be able to run Calligra Suite or Active. Due various restrictions, Symbian is not compatible with Calligra Engine. If the Android port of Qt matures to release quality at some point, Calligra Active for Android is a possibility but no concrete plans are currently in progress.
