[https://www.matrix.org Matrix] is an open standard for interoperable, decentralised, real-time communications. KDE is officially using Matrix for collaboration for KDE, superseding more antiquated and closed source services. Matrix is an open protocol and network for decentralized communication, backed by an open standard and open source reference implementations for servers, clients, client SDKs, bridges, bots and more. It provides all the features you’d expect from a modern chat system: infinite scrollback, file transfer, typing notifications, read receipts, presence, search, push notifications, stickers, VoIP calling and conferencing, etc. It even provides end-to-end encryption (based on Signal’s double ratchet algorithm) for when you want some privacy.

== Clients ==
== Getting Started ==
You can chat using your web browser and visiting [https://webchat.kde.org KDE's webchat] or you can use a desktop or mobile client. [https://matrix.org/docs/projects/clients-matrix Here is a list of clients for your desktop or mobile devices].

== Registering and Logging in ==
See the [https://matrix.org/try-matrix/ "Try Matrix" page] created by the Matrix Foundation, which has a walk-through of how to start chatting with Matrix.

==== On the web ====
While registrations on the KDE Matrix homeserver are '''closed''', you can register on '''any Matrix homeserver''' and you will be able to talk to anyone using Matrix.
# Visit [https://webchat.kde.org KDE's online webchat]
# Locate the *Create Account* button
[[File:Web_registration_00.png]]
Press it.
# In the next dialog

make sure *Server Name* is set to *https://kde.modular.im* and press *Next*.
You should pick a homeserver from this [https://joinmatrix.org/servers/ list of public homeservers]. The [https://app.element.io/#/register official matrix.org homeserver] is also available, but it will be slower due to its high number of users.

==== Using a desktop client ====
After registration you may use any Matrix website to log in, but KDE provides an instance of Element Web hosted at [https://webchat.kde.org webchat.kde.org] ('''Registering an account here is disabled, create an account from other webserver and login here''') that you can use anytime to log in, no matter where you registered your account.
After you have chosen you client, register with your username

== Groups ==
To log in to the KDE Matrix Webchat with an account from a different homeserver, use your full '''''@username:homeserver.com''''' instead of your plain username, like so:

Check back often as we will be adding new groups as we go.
:@johndoe:matrix.org

=== Welcome ===
You may also use any [https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/ desktop or mobile Matrix client]. KDE provides a Matrix client that you can use called [https://apps.kde.org/neochat/ NeoChat].

IrcsomeBot is a Telegram bot that can bridge a Telegram group with an IRC channel. However there are the following shortcomings:
|-

|[https://go.kde.org/matrix/#/#plasma-discover:kde.org Discover] || KDE software center (app store).
* A KDE sysadmin needs to [https://community.kde.org/Infrastructure/IRC#Telegram_Bridge setup the bridge] between each group/channel. Matrix instead supports out of the box any freenode channel (and also other IRC networks).
|-
* IrcsomeBot is the only nickname that joins the IRC channel and forwards the messages sent from Telegram on behalf of their senders. Matrix instead performs a native bridging between the two protocols and creates a real IRC user that joins the IRC channel. Other people will be able to keep the usual IRC workflow with your bridged nickname (<code>/whois</code>, <code>/query</code>, etc.). In fact, they won't even know that you are using the Matrix bridge instead of a classic IRC client.

Latest revision as of 17:30, 10 November 2024

KDE is officially using Matrix for collaboration within the community. Matrix is an open protocol and network for decentralized communication. It provides all the features you would expect from a modern chat system: infinite scrollback, file transfer, typing notifications, read receipts, etc. It even provides end-to-end encryption for privacy (for private conversations).

Furthermore, Matrix natively supports bridges to other protocols, such as IRC where KDE also has channels. This means that you can use a Matrix client to join and use IRC channels as if they were Matrix rooms.

Getting Started

See the "Try Matrix" page created by the Matrix Foundation, which has a walk-through of how to start chatting with Matrix.

While registrations on the KDE Matrix homeserver are closed, you can register on any Matrix homeserver and you will be able to talk to anyone using Matrix.

You should pick a homeserver from this list of public homeservers. The official matrix.org homeserver is also available, but it will be slower due to its high number of users.

After registration you may use any Matrix website to log in, but KDE provides an instance of Element Web hosted at webchat.kde.org (Registering an account here is disabled, create an account from other webserver and login here) that you can use anytime to log in, no matter where you registered your account.

To log in to the KDE Matrix Webchat with an account from a different homeserver, use your full @username:homeserver.com instead of your plain username, like so:

@johndoe:matrix.org

You may also use any desktop or mobile Matrix client. KDE provides a Matrix client that you can use called NeoChat.

Support for KDE Matrix servers

You can ask questions related to Matrix over the #kde-matrix-support:kde.org room. If you need help with the IRC integration in Matrix, see the Matrix/IRC Help page.

Space home

If your Matrix client supports browsing spaces (like Element) then you can join the KDE Community Matrix space home. Here you can see and search the list of Matrix rooms and spaces from the KDE Community.
