KDE Visual Design Group/HIG/Notification

Purpose

Notifications are passive, they do not gain the focus, of events that happen in the background. E.g. arrival of new mails, incoming chat messages.

Example

Guidelines

Is this the right control

  • Use notifications to display information that does not require user action right away. E.g. don't use notifications for confirm changes. Use a Dialog if user interaction is required.
  • Don't use notifications if your application might create them very often. Eg. Don't use a notification to show online / offline status of all contacts in a chat application

Behavior

Notifications a shown for X seconds and then fade out. The user can see faded out notifications if she clicks on the notification icon in the system tray.

Appearance

Notifications have a close icon and on configure icon on the top right
